Energy committee praises East Anglia’s clean energy role

The Energy Security and Net Zero Committee has praised East Anglia for its role in the UK’s low-carbon energy future.

The committee, led by chair Bill Esterson Labour MP for Sefton Central, visited key energy projects in the region.

This included the Port of Lowestoft, Sizewell C, and ScottishPower Renewables’ East Anglia ONE operations and maintenance base.

Mr Esterson said: “The Port of Lowestoft is an inspiring example of how the UK’s ports can support the energy transition, working collaboratively with projects like Sizewell C and ScottishPower Renewables.

“It’s impressive to see the progress being made here, from pioneering carbon capture technology to vital offshore wind energy operations.

“Crucially, the projects we saw create well-paid jobs and can ultimately help deliver lower electricity bills.”

The committee toured the newly completed Lowestoft Eastern Energy Facility which is owned by ABP, owner of the Port of Ipswich.

They also explored the Direct Air Capture demonstrator facility, one of the UK’s first pilot projects for this technology, led by Sizewell C.

Paul Ager, divisional port manager at ABP, said: “The completion of the Lowestoft Eastern Energy Facility and our partnership with Sizewell C on the Direct Air Capture project underline our commitment to innovation and sustainability.”

The committee visited the main development site of Sizewell C, a new 3.2GW nuclear power station on the Suffolk coast.

Julia Pyke, joint managing director of Sizewell C, said: “Sizewell C is already set to become one of the UK’s biggest contributors to energy security, is climate friendly, and is making a great contribution to opportunity in the region.”

The committee toured the ScottishPower Renewables Operations and Maintenance base for the East Anglia ONE offshore wind farm, located at the Port of Lowestoft.

Ross Ovens, managing director for offshore at ScottishPower Renewables, said: “Lowestoft is the home and heart of ScottishPower’s offshore wind operations in the UK.”
